We
were fascinated with the forest! We saw fallen logs that made a moist,
soggy habitat for mosses, ferns, lichens, and new tree seedlings. Theses
fallen logs are called nurse logs, because young trees grow on the top
mossy surface of the fallen trees.
We
looked closely at the nurse log and found tiny seedlings that germinated.
They were growing from crevices in the bark. In
time, many of the seedlings become saplings. As the saplings grow big and
strong, they send roots around the nurse log and into the ground below.
